Excellent WordPress blog site, great information- thanks!! As a person concerned about future generations and our Earth, I thing the greener funeral movement is great. I really want a home funeral, beside my pond in my gardens in my NWF Certified Wildlife Habitat backyard with as little money spent as possible on my body preparation but for food, drinks & anything needed for my survivors & friends. I want to donate my organs, tissue, etc. to people who need them and then cremate the rest. It's funny, my husband won't talk about it but here I am including it in my comments! LOL

Jennifer -- the fact that you are now informed will be of tremendous value to your family and friends as you start telling your story like you did in your comment here. If you need more resources or want to brainstorm contact me and I'll be happy to share ideas. Home and family-directed funerals have many layers of value -- from practical, to emotional, and spiritual. I hope more and more Americans choose this option. ~ Donna Belk

I am very impressed with the information found here. Just recently someone in my community died who was indigient. Persons thought that I would be a good resource of info for the family because I do Bereaved Parents of the USA in my hometown. I had not a clue. I went on the IN and found FCA which was a wealth of knowledge. I am joining. People need this info and help in this hard economic times. I wish there was a way to inform people better in my community. It hurts inside that people cannot even afford a funeral at the cost they are. I think if people were more, or better informed they would opt for this. This is a good thing. What can I do?

What an excellent resource for any family or group of friends "testing the waters" to see if home funerals are something they might like to do, or for a family or group of friends already acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to offer a family-directed funeral. Donna is so calm and nurturing in her presentation of how to wash, dress and transport the body that it is possible for the viewer to imagine how deeply moving and spiritual at-home care of the dead can be. I'm grateful she has made this resource available at such an affordable price so that anyone interested in the subject can obtain it. If a group considering home funerals can only buy one video guide to the subject, this is the one I'd recommend.

Thank you! It's about time...

I am studying to be a final trasition (death) midwife and I currently work for a funeral service transporting deceased people.

It's a thankless job that pays between
$9 and $10 per hour in the city of Portland, OR. It also exposes us to potentially dangerous bodily fluids and situations.

We remove dead people from their homes,
apartments, hospitals, adult foster homes, assisted living and nursing home facilities, railroad tracks, sidewalks, river banks, car crashes and the list goes on.

We deal with natural deaths, diseases,
suicides involving hangings and gunshots
to the head and chest, overdoses as well as decomposed deaths from one week to months!

We deal with men, women, children, infants and the elderly.

From my own personal experience, I can honestly say that all these bodies represent to the funeral directors is:
$$$! All they care about is how many bodies they can get to fill up their coolers. Sad but true.

Let's bring home burials back the way home births made a come back. My two children were born at home with a veteran midwife in the late 80's and I wouldn't change that experience for the world. It was AWESOME!

Families deserve the same option in death. There should be dignity, respect and uninterrupted family involvement in the final transition from
this world to the Spirit realm.

This trend is already being implemented
in the UK.

Thank you again for your informative article.
